I got to make a book, and I get to go on a book tour. Today is day one of about 10 weeks of touring.
I have made 666 logos–I have been paid everything from a burrito to a lot of money. But I’ve never been interested in the big bucks before doing what I do.
It’s okay to have a bunch of BS in your portfolio. No one is going to ask how much you were paid; they want to see good work.
I’ve had Field Notes in my pocket for years. I break the ice with clients through giving them cool stuff.
I got 1500 books. Abrams was touting the book as a “Mid Career Survey” of my work.
The book was made with grid dynamics. I got to have an embossed cover. I used old notes and drawings from when I was younger. I kept all these things, and now the great privilege of sharing it.
Average book workday was 8am-3pm, worked on it four months. I didn’t even have time to wear pants.
My girlfriend deserved a “Patient Girlfriend Award.” Graphic design has taken me to Berlin, Guatamala, etc.
My team works together to make everything happen. There are no rules; we watch over one another.
There’s a spread in my book for Bend. Moving out west was the greatest decision I ever made.
There is a charm in having paper close. My Field Notes go back to my background in the Midwest.
I get to be in all these conferences with big wigs. Some of them say I’m sharing too much, but I don’t care. I show it ALL–I don’t care.
People draw me. I’m blown away.
Trolls, haters, rip-off designers, prick grad students–these guys come after me. You don’t need to say anything to them. I wanted to say something.
I’m most proud that my book is affordable. I didn’t want my book to be $100+. My book is $39.95.
- Making a book is intense
- Trust your editors
- Back up your shit along the say
- Be smart with your files
I made a slip case filled with a bunch of cool shit. Lighten our load!
We are going everywhere on our tour. We have a tour van.
I’m in my third printing. You walk into Barnes & Noble in Grapevine, TX and my book is there. When you see my book out there, put it on the top shelf!
I made two logos for Obama. It blew my mind to work for President Obama! I did 141 logo comps. I got death threats because I worked for the “godless president.”
I told Obama, “I’m going to miss you, man!” I got the hand clasp and hit on the shoulder because I was crying.
We’re all sitting on this little rock, we are just a speck. That’s real right now.
“I made a logo for the sun. May as well go big.”
Bernie’s people called me to make a poster.
